However, there are several insects that can sometimes bite or sting people. Most bug bites and stings are minor, but some can cause serious allergic reactions or spread diseases. Knowing how to prevent bites and what to do if one happens can help keep you safe. The best way to avoid bug bites and stings is to take simple safety precautions. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes when hiking or walking through tall grass. Use insect repellent that is approved for your age and follow the directions on the label. Avoid wearing strongly scented perfumes or lotions, which may attract bees and other insects. Stay away from insect nests, hives, and areas where bugs are gathering. If you are bitten by a mosquito or another insect, wash the area with soap and water. Applying a cold pack can help reduce swelling and itching. Try not to scratch the bite because scratching can break the skin and increase the risk of infection. An adult may also use an anti-itch cream or other medicine if needed. If you are stung by a bee, remove the stinger as quickly as possible by gently scraping it away with the edge of a credit card or your fingernail. Wash the area with soap and water, then apply a cold pack to reduce pain and swelling. Avoid squeezing the stinger because doing so may release more venom into the skin. If you find a tick on your skin, use fine-tipped tweezers to grab it as close to your skin as possible. Pull straight up with steady, even pressure. Do not twist, squeeze, or burn the tick. After you remove it, wash the bite area and your hands with soap and water. Watch for a rash, fever, or flu-like symptoms over the next few weeks. If you notice any of these signs or have trouble removing the tick, contact your doctor right away. Some bites and stings require immediate medical care. Call 911 right away if a person has trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, severe dizziness, or loses consciousness after a sting or bite. These may be signs of a serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. If the person has been prescribed an epinephrine auto-injector, such as an EpiPen, a trained adult should use it immediately while waiting for emergency medical services. Bug bites and stings are a normal part of spending time outdoors, but they do not have to ruin your fun. By wearing protective clothing, using insect repellent, avoiding insect nests, and knowing how to respond to bites and stings, you can greatly reduce your risk of injury or illness.
